“When I Think About Death, I Think About Life”

Every Friday, Allah gives us a beautiful reminder: slow down, reflect, and return to Him.
And today, as I looked at the image above, a simple grave, a simple dua, it struck my heart deeply.

I have such a beautiful life.
Alhamdulillah, Allah has granted me blessings I don’t deserve and opportunities I never imagined. Yet, sometimes I worry… am I taking all of this for granted? Am I being led astray without even realising it?

Because the truth is:
We live, we get busy, we chase, we plan, we work…
But at the end of everything, we will lie beneath the soil.
And only our deeds follow us.

Lately, I think about death more often.
Not in a scary way, but in a grounding way. A way that reminds me:

  • Have I done enough good?

  • Will people want to pray for my jenazah?

  • Have I settled my debts, financial, emotional, and spiritual?

  • Have I become someone who leaves behind benefits?

And the hardest question of all:
Will Allah be pleased with me when my time is up?

I am weak.
I have many sins.
I repeat mistakes I thought I had already overcome.
But even with my weaknesses, I hold onto one hope:

“Do not lose hope in the mercy of Allah.”
(Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53)

Because His Mercy is greater than our sins, greater than our past, greater than our fears.

A Decision I Made Today

Today, on this blessed Friday, I made a personal decision:
To empower myself with knowledge, specifically AI knowledge, not for fame, not for money, but because I want to be better.

Better at serving people.
Better at contributing to the ummah.
Better at managing my time so I can focus on what truly matters:

Being the best servant to Allah SWT.

AI can give me time back.
AI can help me plan better.
AI can give me clarity.
AI can make me more productive so that I can spend more time on ibadah, family, charity, and meaningful work.

This dunia is temporary.
But the good we leave behind lives on in people’s hearts.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others.”
(Hadith — Sahih Al-Jami’)

And that is my hope
To be a person of benefit while I am alive,
And to be remembered in someone’s dua when I am gone.

The Grave Teaches Us the Greatest Lesson

A grave teaches silence, but it also teaches clarity.
It reminds us that everything we chase, wealth, reputation, success, remains here.
Only three things follow us:

  1. Our deeds

  2. Our knowledge that benefits others

  3. The dua of righteous children or people who remember us
    (Hadith — Sahih Muslim)

So I ask myself:

Am I doing enough that someone will remember me in their dua?
Am I teaching enough good that my knowledge becomes my sadaqah jariyah?
Am I building anything that lasts beyond my life?

These thoughts are uncomfortable but necessary.
They are a mercy from Allah
A reminder to return, reflect, and realign.

Ya Allah…

Ya Allah, You know my weaknesses.
You know my private sins and my silent struggles.
You know how many times I promise to improve but fall again.

Ya Allah, please guide me.
Grant me the strength to become better.
Put barakah in my time.
Allow me to help more people.
Allow me to do more good.
Allow me to leave behind knowledge and kindness that continue after I am gone.

And when my bones lie beneath the soil,
when the world forgets me,
grant me people who will still make dua for me.

Ameen.

Lessons for Today

  • Life is temporary. Purpose is permanent.

  • Time is a trust; use it wisely.

  • AI can help us be more productive, but taqwa helps us be more purposeful.

  • The best life is one spent benefiting others.

  • Jumu’ah is a weekly reset — return to Allah every week.

Call-to-Action

"Take five minutes today to realign your heart with your purpose. Life is short — let’s live it for Allah."
