The Birth of PIDO

When I first started using ChatGPT in October 2022, I was curious about how this new tool could assist in my daily work as CEO of Yayasan Wiba Prima and as a professional trainer. Day by day, as I experimented, refined, and applied AI across different tasks, I noticed one undeniable truth:

The output of AI depends entirely on the quality of the input we provide.

From this realization, I began developing what was originally called CIDO (Context, Instructions, Details, Output). Over time, I refined it into PIDO (Parameter, Instructions, Details, Output) – a framework that is sharper, more professional, and unique.

Today, I have successfully utilized PIDO in my own work and shared it in training sessions with the SIRIM, Xperts Group, GIATMARA, teachers in the Visual Teachers program, and many others.

The PIDO Framework

🔹 P – Parameter
Define the scope, role, and context.
Example: “You are a senior lecturer designing a 2-hour workshop for diploma students.”

🔹 I – Instructions
Give clear and specific directions.
Example: “Create an interactive workshop outline with group activities.”

🔹 D – Details
Provide supporting information, data, or constraints.
Example: “Include timing, materials needed, and expected learning outcomes.”

🔹 O – Output
Specify the exact format or style you want.
Example: “Present the plan in a table format with columns for Time, Activity, and Outcome.”

This 4-step process ensures that AI delivers results that are relevant, structured, and actionable.

Why PIDO Matters

In our short time on this earth, we are called to make the best use of our skills, knowledge, and tools. Allah SWT reminds us in the Qur’an:

“And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth – all from Him. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.” (Surah Al-Jathiyah, 45:13)

Technology, including AI, is one of these tools. But like any tool, it requires mastery. Without proper knowledge and method, we risk being mere users, consuming blindly, instead of creators who shape and contribute meaningfully.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The best of people are those that bring the most benefit to the rest of mankind.” (Sahih al-Jami, 3289)

By mastering frameworks like PIDO, we move beyond just using AI for convenience. We become more effective, productive, and impactful – able to contribute more to our families, organizations, and society.

AI is not here to replace us. It is here to amplify us. But amplification only works if we have something worth amplifying, our fundamental knowledge, skills, and expertise in our respective fields.
