Before You Upload Anything to AI, Read This!

Artificial Intelligence has transformed the way we work. Whether we are drafting proposals, analyzing documents, or developing strategies, tools like ChatGPT can help us become more productive.
But there is one important question we should always ask:
Are we protecting the information entrusted to us?
The more information we provide to AI, the better it can understand our needs. However, sharing too much could expose personal, organizational, or confidential information to unnecessary risks.
Start With Your Privacy Settings
If you're using ChatGPT, open Settings → Data Controls and turn off “Improve the model for everyone.”
This prevents eligible new conversations from being used for model training. However, it does not eliminate other privacy, security, or confidentiality risks.
Remember that different AI platforms have different data policies and controls.
Apply the Traffic Light Rule
🟢 GREEN — Safe to Share
General knowledge, public information, brainstorming ideas, and non-sensitive content.
🟡 YELLOW — Be Careful
Internal proposals, business strategies, meeting notes, and financial information. Review and remove unnecessary sensitive details, and obtain permission where required.
🔴 RED — Do Not Share by Default
Personal identification details, passwords, financial records, confidential agreements, beneficiary information, and other restricted data. Such information requires explicit authorization and appropriate safeguards before being processed by an AI service.
My Simple Rule
Before uploading anything, ask yourself:
“If this information were exposed, could it harm someone, breach confidentiality, or damage my organization?”
If the answer is yes, reconsider what you share.
The goal is not to stop using AI. It is to use AI intelligently, responsibly, and ethically.
My guiding principle is simple:
Maximum Context. Minimum Exposure.
Because AI is powerful, but amanah matters.
