5 Rules to Keep People Engaged During Your Talk – and Why It Matters

5 Rules to Keep People Engaged During Your Talk – and Why It Matters

In today’s fast-paced digital world, keeping people’s attention during a talk is no small feat. Our minds are constantly bombarded with notifications, videos, and endless streams of information. The average attention span has dramatically decreased, and if you’ve ever spoken to a group, from children in a classroom to adults in a seminar, you know the challenge is real.

So, how do we ensure our words truly resonate? How do we make sure people stay engaged from start to finish?

I once delivered a talk to a group of college students. At first, they seemed attentive, but within minutes, eyes drifted toward phones, and a few even looked half-asleep. That was when I changed my approach. Instead of talking at them, I began drawing simple visuals on the whiteboard while speaking. Instantly, their heads turned. Phones were put away. Questions started flowing.

That day, I realized: it’s not just what you say, but how you say it, and how you keep people engaged along the way.

The infographic above outlines 5 Rules to Keep People Engaged During Your Talk, and I’ve found them incredibly powerful. Let’s break them down with insights from the Quran and Hadith to inspire us to become better communicators.

1. The Rule of Abstraction – Move from Abstract to Concrete

Start with big ideas, then bring them down to earth with stories and examples.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) often used parables and stories to teach profound lessons. As narrated in Sahih Bukhari, he once compared guidance and knowledge to life-giving rain, describing how different types of land respond differently to water, a powerful image that everyone could visualize and remember.

Lesson: Begin with concepts, but end with relatable, real-life examples.

2. The Rule of Controversy – Keep It Spicy

People pay attention when they hear something unexpected. Start by presenting a common belief before introducing your point.

The Quran says:

“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.” (Surah An-Nahl 16:125)

Instead of simply stating facts, acknowledge what people already think, then gently challenge or expand it.

3. The One Problem Rule – Stay Focused

One talk, one main problem. Don’t try to solve everything in one go.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) would speak in a way that was short, concise, and meaningful. His companions said, “He would speak clearly so that everyone understood, and he would not burden people with long speeches.” (Sunan Abu Dawud)

Lesson: Focus on one main message for maximum impact.

4. The Rule of Suspense – Build Curiosity

Don’t reveal all your points upfront. Share one idea at a time to keep people curious.

Think of it like reading a book; if you know the ending on page one, would you keep reading?

Lesson: Create suspense in your delivery. Keep people wondering, “What’s next?”

5. The 2-Minute Rule – Keep Changing Things Up

Attention fades quickly. Switch between stories, visuals, charts, or even memes every 1–2 minutes.

That day with the college students, my simple act of drawing turned a boring lecture into a lively discussion. It wasn’t magic; it was about changing the rhythm so people stayed awake and curious.

Lesson: Variety isn’t just fun, it’s essential for engagement.

Final Thoughts

As speakers, trainers, or educators, our goal isn’t just to talk. It’s to connect, inspire, and leave people with something valuable.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Speak to people according to their level of understanding.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Today, that means speaking with wisdom, creativity, and structure so our message truly lands.

So, the next time you deliver a talk, try using these 5 Rules, and maybe even draw as you speak. You might be surprised at how powerful it can be.

One-Sentence Call-to-Action

Want your next talk to be unforgettable? Apply these 5 rules today!

Choose Your Hard: The Power of Deliberate Choices

Choose Your Hard: The Power of Deliberate Choices

“If you don’t choose your hard, your hard will choose you.”Unknown

Life is full of challenges. Whether it’s staying healthy, building wealth, nurturing relationships, or growing spiritually, nothing worthwhile comes easy. The truth is simple: you can’t avoid hardship, but you can choose which hardship you want to endure.

Everyday Choices, Everyday Hardships

We all want the best in life: good health, financial stability, fulfilling relationships, and spiritual peace. But here’s the catch: each goal comes with its own set of challenges.

Take health, for example. Controlling your diet, waking up early to exercise, and saying no to unhealthy cravings is tough. But what’s tougher? Battling lifestyle diseases like diabetes or heart problems later in life.

The same goes for finances. Working hard, saving money, and making sacrifices today is tough. But living with financial stress and unfulfilled dreams because of poor choices is even harder.

In the end, we all face hardship. The question is: which hardship leads to the life you want?

A Real-Life Example: A Friend’s Journey

A close friend of mine struggled with weight issues for years. He loved food, hated exercise, and always promised himself he’d “start tomorrow.”

One day, a health scare changed everything; his blood pressure shot up, and the doctor warned him about possible heart complications. Suddenly, the “hard” he had been avoiding- exercise, healthy eating, self-control- seemed far easier than living with chronic illness.

Within a year, he lost 20 kg, started running marathons, and now inspires others with his story. He always says, “I wish I had chosen the hard earlier—before the hard chose me.”

Quranic and Hadith Insights

The Quran reminds us that hardship is temporary, and with struggle comes ease:

“For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.”
(Surah Al-Inshirah, 94:5-6)

The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ also taught the value of effort and delayed gratification:

“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2664)

Strength here is not just physical; it is spiritual, mental, and emotional. It comes from discipline, resilience, and making the right choices even when it’s tough.

Lessons We Can Take

  1. Hardship is unavoidable – but we have the power to decide which hardship will shape our lives.

  2. Delayed gratification pays off – choosing short-term struggles often leads to long-term rewards.

  3. Faith gives strength – knowing that Allah promises ease after hardship helps us stay patient and hopeful.

  4. Action beats intention – waiting for “the right time” only lets hardship choose us instead.

Call-to-Action

So today, ask yourself: Which hard will I choose? Will you choose the hard that leads to growth, health, wealth, and peace, or the hard that comes from neglecting these choices?

Choose wisely. Choose your hard.

Respect is Earned, Not Given: 12 Habits That Will Transform Your Life and Career

Respect is Earned, Not Given: 12 Habits That Will Transform Your Life and Career

Inspired by @ryan-yockey

Everyone talks about wanting respect. We want respect at work, at home, in our community. But the reality is this: respect isn’t something you demand, it’s something you earn.

Your age, title, or seniority may give you authority, but it does not guarantee respect. True respect comes when people look at you and say, “I trust this person. I admire their character.”

The best way to start earning respect? Give it freely first.

The Quran reminds us:

“And speak to people good words.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:83)

And the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said:

“None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

This means respect, kindness, and dignity are at the heart of faith, and at the heart of every meaningful relationship.

A Personal Story: When Respect Changes Everything

Years ago, I met a young executive in a large corporation. He was talented, ambitious, and had just been promoted. But he told me he felt invisible; people listened to him because of his title, not because they truly respected him.

One day, he decided to change his approach. Instead of walking into meetings trying to prove he was the smartest person in the room, he started listening first. He gave credit to his team when things went well and took responsibility when things didn’t.

Over time, something remarkable happened. His team started opening up. They trusted him more, worked harder for him, and even defended him in leadership meetings.

What changed? He stopped chasing respect and started cultivating it, habit by habit.

12 Habits of Highly Respected Professionals

These habits aren’t about perfection. They’re about consistency, humility, and genuine care for others. Let’s break them down with real-life examples:

  1. Do what you say you’ll do
Reliability builds trust. Think of the colleague who always delivers on time—you respect them because you can count on them.

  2. Respect everyone, regardless of position
I once saw a CEO who knew the janitor’s name and asked about his family every morning. That simple act of respect made everyone admire him.

  3. Give credit, never take it
Great leaders shine the spotlight on others. When a project succeeds, they say, “My team made this happen,” not “I made this happen.”

  4. Listen more than you talk
People feel valued when they’re heard. A respected teacher once told me, “I listen twice as much as I speak. That’s how I learn.”

  5. Handle mistakes with grace
Everyone makes mistakes. But owning them without excuses? That’s what earns admiration.

  6. Admit when you don’t know something
Pretending to know everything pushes people away. Humility draws them closer.

  7. Stay calm under pressure
In moments of chaos, the calmest person in the room becomes the anchor everyone relies on.

  8. Ask for feedback and use it
A manager who says, “Tell me how I can do better,” shows strength, not weakness.

  9. Stay consistent, even when it’s hard
No shortcuts. No excuses. Just steady progress, that’s how credibility is built.

  10. Stand up for what’s right
Even when it’s unpopular, integrity speaks louder than convenience.

  11. Set boundaries and respect others’
Healthy limits show maturity and foster mutual respect.

  12. Make others feel valued
People may forget what you say, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.

Wisdom from Islam: Respect as a Way of Life

The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said:

“The most beloved of people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to the people.” (al-Mu’jam al-Awsaṭ)

Being beneficial includes respecting others, honoring their dignity, and making them feel seen and heard.

Another Hadith says:

“He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young ones and respect to our elders.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi)

Respect isn’t a corporate skill. It’s a life skill.

Your Challenge: Start Small, Start Today

You don’t have to change everything overnight. Pick one habit from the list and practice it this week. Maybe it’s listening more. Maybe it’s giving credit to someone on your team.

Respect grows over time. Like planting a seed, you water it daily with small actions until it becomes a tree that gives shade to everyone around you.

Final Thoughts

When you focus on giving respect rather than chasing it, something shifts. People see your character, not just your title.

Because at the end of the day, people respect those who respect others.

A Wake-Up Call: My Journey to Health and Faith After 50

A Wake-Up Call: My Journey to Health and Faith After 50

Last year, life handed me a moment I will never forget.

It was early in the morning when I felt a strange tightness in my chest. At first, I thought it was fatigue or stress. But that day turned out to be the day I had a mild heart attack, a wake-up call that shook me to my core.

I had always thought of myself as someone healthy enough. Yes, I was busy with work, meetings, projects, and family responsibilities, but I believed I was managing fine. Then this happened, and it forced me to pause. It was as if Allah SWT was telling me, “Slow down. Take care of the body I have entrusted to you.”

Ever since that day, I have been doing regular 6-month medical check-ups.

The Latest Check-Up: More Lessons for Me

Today was another check-up day. I walked into the clinic expecting routine updates, but this time, my doctor had more to say:

  • My left foot now suffers from plantar fasciitis—an inflammation that makes walking painful. He told me it’s part of aging and something I have to manage for life.

  • And then came the real shock: I’m pre-diabetic.

It hit me hard. Diabetes runs in many families, and I’ve seen people struggle with it. My doctor advised me to watch my sugar intake, start eating better, and exercise regularly.

I sat there reflecting: Here I am, at the age of 50, being reminded again that health is a blessing I cannot afford to neglect.

The Turning Point: A Simple 15-Minute Routine

I left the clinic determined to make a change, starting small but consistently. I came across this 15-minute morning workout routine that doesn’t need any fancy equipment or gym membership:

  • 20 Jumping Jacks

  • 20 Squats

  • 20 Lunges

  • 10 Push-ups

  • 40 Punches

  • 60 seconds Elbow Plank

Repeat 3 times, with 2 minutes rest in between.

It’s simple. It’s doable. It’s a start.

Stories That Inspire Me

I think of my mother, who, in her 70s, never misses her Tai Chi sessions. Even with knee pain, she moves at her own pace. She once told me, “Son, if you stop moving, you start aging twice as fast.”

I remember a friend who was once overweight, stressed, and constantly falling sick. A doctor gave him a choice: start exercising or start taking lifelong medication. He chose exercise. Today, he runs marathons.

And of course, there is the inspiring story of the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ, who emphasized moderation in eating and regular physical activity. He once said:

“The son of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one-third with food, one-third with drink, and one-third with air.”
— [Sunan Ibn Majah]

Health and Faith: A Divine Trust

Our health is an amanah—a trust from Allah SWT. The Quran says:

“Do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction.”
— [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:195]

And the Prophet ๏ทบ reminded us:

“There are two blessings which many people waste: health and free time.”
— [Sahih Bukhari]

I realize now that taking care of my body is not just about living longer, it’s about living well enough to perform solat, to serve my family, to help my community, and to worship Allah SWT until my last breath.

The Real Wealth: Health

Many people chase wealth, titles, and possessions. But when health fails, nothing else matters. As someone told me once, “A healthy person has a thousand dreams; a sick person has only one.”

That’s why I’m sharing this today—not because I have it all figured out, but because I want to remind myself and you: start now. Take that walk. Do those 20 squats. Say no to the extra sugar.

Small steps today prevent bigger problems tomorrow.

A Personal Prayer

May Allah SWT grant us all:

  • Good health in our bodies

  • Strength in our faith

  • The ability to worship Him with ease

Ameen.

Your Turn

If you’re reading this, don’t wait for a health scare to make a change. Start small, stay consistent, and pray for barakah in your health. Share this with someone who needs a reminder today.

From Fear to Fearless: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking

From Fear to Fearless: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking

Ask anyone what their biggest fear is, and you’ll be surprised how many people will say public speaking. For some, it’s even scarier than death!

But let’s pause and think, why is public speaking so terrifying?

It’s not the act of standing and speaking itself. It’s the fear of being judged. What if people laugh at me? What if I forget my words? What if I make a mistake?

I know this fear firsthand.

My First Encounter with the Stage

During my very first month on the job, I was tasked with being the emcee for an important event. It should have been an honor, a chance to prove myself. But instead of rising to the occasion, I panicked.

The thought of standing on stage, with hundreds of eyes on me, was unbearable. I found a replacement MC just to avoid the role.

Back then, my hands trembled, my palms were sweaty, butterflies danced in my stomach, and I felt like vomiting at the mere thought of holding the mic.

If you’ve ever been asked to speak in front of others, you probably know exactly what that feels like.

But here’s what I’ve learned since: fear is normal, but it doesn’t have to define you.

๐ŸŒฑ The Islamic Perspective on Public Speaking

Speech is one of the most powerful tools Allah SWT has gifted us. The Qur’an is filled with reminders about the importance of speaking with wisdom and kindness.

Allah says:

“And speak to them words of appropriate kindness.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:63)

Even the prophets, those chosen by Allah, experienced fear in speaking. Prophet Musa (AS), when tasked to confront Pharaoh, made a heartfelt dua:

“O my Lord! Expand for me my chest, ease my task for me, and untie the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech.” (Surah Taha 20:25–28)

This dua is a timeless reminder: nervousness is part of being human. Even the greatest among us sought help to overcome it.

The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ also emphasized the value of purposeful speech:

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.” (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

When you speak, your words matter. They can inspire, heal, or transform lives.

๐ŸŽค Every Master Was Once a Disaster

Public speaking is like any other skill; you don’t start as a master. Every confident speaker you admire today once stumbled, stuttered, or forgot their lines.

Take Warren Buffett, one of the world’s most successful investors. Early in his career, he was terrified of public speaking. He once admitted he avoided any situation where he had to stand in front of a crowd. But he forced himself to enroll in a Dale Carnegie public speaking course. Today, he credits that decision as one of the most valuable investments of his life, not just for his career, but for his confidence as a leader.

Or consider Malcolm X, who transformed from a man with little formal education into one of the most electrifying speakers of the 20th century. His speeches could move entire crowds to action. But he didn’t start that way; his skill was built through constant practice, conviction, and courage.

The lesson? If they could overcome fear, so can you.

๐Ÿช„ Secrets to Crush Your Next Speech

George Stern’s Public Speaking Secrets (image shared above) breaks down the art of speaking into practical steps anyone can follow. Let me highlight a few gems:

  1. Hook, Not Bio – Don’t waste your opening with a boring introduction. Grab attention with a story, a bold statement, or a question.

  2. Group in Threes – People remember better in threes. Structure your points that way: “Here are three lessons I learned…”

  3. Speak to One Person – Lock eyes with one person per thought. It makes your message personal and grounded.

  4. Rehearse Aloud – Don’t just read in your head. Practice out loud with full energy, the way you’ll deliver it.

  5. Circle Back – End your speech by revisiting your opening. It creates a sense of closure and makes your message stick.

These are not just tricks, they are tools to help you focus less on your fear and more on delivering value to your audience.

๐Ÿš€ How to Conquer the Fear of Public Speaking

So how do you move from fear to fearless? Here are a few steps that helped me and countless others:

  • Start Small – Volunteer to present in meetings. Share a story during gatherings. The more you speak, the less intimidating it feels.

  • Shift the Focus – It’s not about you. It’s about your audience. What do they need to hear? What will benefit them?

  • Reframe Nervousness – Those butterflies? That’s just your body getting ready to perform. Channel that energy into your voice and movement.

  • Make Dua – Recite the dua of Musa (AS) before speaking. Ask Allah to ease your tongue and guide your words.

    ✨ Dua Before Public Speaking

One of the most beautiful and practical duas for speaking comes from Prophet Musa (AS), when he was tasked with confronting Pharaoh. He asked Allah SWT to grant him calmness, clarity, and confidence:

    ุฑَุจِّ ุงุดْุฑَุญْ ู„ِูŠ ุตَุฏْุฑِูŠ • ูˆَูŠَุณِّุฑْ ู„ِูŠ ุฃَู…ْุฑِูŠ • ูˆَุงุญْู„ُู„ْ ุนُู‚ْุฏَุฉً ู…ِّู† ู„ِّุณَุงู†ِูŠ • ูŠَْูู‚َู‡ُูˆุง ู‚َูˆْู„ِูŠ
“My Lord, expand for me my chest, and ease for me my task, and untie the knot from my tongue, that they may understand my speech.”
    (Surah Taha 20:25–28)

๐Ÿ’ก Recite this dua before a presentation, talk, or meeting to calm your nerves and seek Allah’s help in delivering your message clearly.

  • Remember Your Why – Every speech is an opportunity to inspire, teach, or motivate. Don’t let fear rob others of the gift of your message.

๐ŸŒŸ Your Leadership Depends on It

The truth is simple: to lead, you must communicate.

Leadership is not just about ideas, strategies, or vision; it’s about conveying them clearly so others are inspired to follow. Public speaking is one of the most powerful media to do exactly that.

As John Maxwell puts it, “Leadership is influence. Nothing more, nothing less.” And one of the most direct ways to influence others is through your words.

So if you want to grow as a leader, as a professional, as a believer, you cannot run away from public speaking.

๐ŸŽฏ Final Call: Your Voice Matters

The next time you’re handed a microphone or asked to say a few words, don’t run away like I once did. Step forward. Take a deep breath. Smile. And speak.

Because your voice has power. It could be the spark someone needs to take action. It could be the comfort someone needs to keep going.

And remember—every master was once a disaster.

So start where you are. Speak when you can. And trust that with every attempt, you’re one step closer to fearless.

Malaysia, My Beloved Home – Why We Must Cherish Our Country

Malaysia, My Beloved Home – Why We Must Cherish Our Country

Today, as we celebrate Hari Malaysia 2025, I am filled with gratitude and pride for this land I call home. Malaysia is not just where I was born; it is where my heart belongs.

Having traveled to different countries, I’ve experienced cultures, languages, and lifestyles from around the world. Each place has its beauty, but no matter how far I go, Malaysia always draws me back. The comfort of hearing Bahasa Malaysia in the streets, the warmth of our people, and the richness of our culture remind me that there truly is no place like home.

๐ŸŒ A Story of Gratefulness

I once met a refugee family during my travels in the Middle East. They had lost everything because of war: home, job, even the chance for their children to go to school. Their only dream was to live in peace, free from fear.

That encounter changed me. It made me realize how blessed we Malaysians are. We wake up in a country where our children can attend school, where we can walk safely on our streets, and where we are free to practice our faith. Yet, sometimes we complain more than we give thanks.

Allah SWT reminds us:

“And remember when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.’”
(Surah Ibrahim 14:7)

This verse is a powerful reminder that gratitude brings increase, but ingratitude risks the loss of what we have.

❤️ Why Malaysia Is Special

  1. Peace & Stability – While others struggle with conflict, Malaysia enjoys harmony.

  2. Unity in Diversity – Malays, Chinese, Indians, Sabahans, Sarawakians — our differences are our strength.

  3. Modern Yet Rooted in Tradition – From skyscrapers like KLCC to kampung values of gotong-royong, we have the best of both worlds.

  4. Opportunities for Growth – Education, entrepreneurship, and innovation continue to thrive here.

  5. Natural Beauty – From Mount Kinabalu to the beaches of Terengganu, Allah SWT has blessed us with paradise.

๐ŸŒŸ Lessons from the Prophet ๏ทบ

The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ loved his homeland, Makkah, dearly. When he was forced to leave it, he looked back and said:

“By Allah, you are the most beloved land of Allah to me, and had your people not expelled me, I would not have left you.”
(Hadith – Tirmidhi)

This teaches us that loving one’s homeland is part of our faith. It is natural, noble, and necessary.

๐Ÿ™Œ A Call to All Malaysians

As Malaysians, we must not take our blessings lightly. We must:

  • Appreciate our peace and stability.

  • Defend our unity and harmony.

  • Contribute in our own ways to nation-building.

  • Raise our children to be grateful citizens who love this country.

Let us not be like those who only realize the value of something after it is gone. Instead, let us be proactive in nurturing and protecting Malaysia.

๐ŸŒบ My Malaysia, My Pride

Every time I return from abroad, I feel relieved when I see the Jalur Gemilang waving proudly. The taste of nasi lemak, the call to prayer echoing from the masjid, and the smiles of Malaysians all remind me:

This is home. This is where I belong. This is Malaysia.

On this Hari Malaysia, let us stand united, grateful, and committed to making Malaysia better, not just for ourselves but for future generations.

Selamat Hari Malaysia 2025!
May Allah SWT continue to bless this beloved land.

๐ŸŒ Travelling: A Journey to See the Greatness of Allah SWT ✈️

๐ŸŒ Travelling: A Journey to See the Greatness of Allah SWT ✈️

There is something magical about travelling. Every journey feels like opening a brand-new chapter in the book of life. The scenery, the people, the culture, and even the challenges all teach us lessons we could never learn if we stayed in the same place.

For me, travelling is not just about ticking destinations off a list. It is about discovering the greatness of Allah SWT reflected in every corner of the earth. It is about broadening our horizons, deepening our gratitude, and strengthening our faith.

๐ŸŒ… Witnessing the Signs of Allah in Creation

When I stand before the vastness of the sea or the majesty of the mountains, I cannot help but feel small, yet at the same time, deeply connected to something greater. Allah reminds us in the Qur’an:

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.” (Surah Ali Imran, 3:190)

Every sunrise, every ripple of water, and every mountain peak becomes a reminder of His perfection. Travelling allows us to pause, reflect, and truly see these signs with our own eyes.

๐Ÿ’ก Gaining New Perspectives

One of the greatest gifts of travelling is perspective. When you are in a different land, you see how people live, how they solve problems, and how they create joy in their own unique ways.

This sparks new ideas. It teaches us that there is no one “right” way to do things and that creativity often comes from observing and learning from others. The Prophet ๏ทบ himself encouraged seeking knowledge, even if it meant travelling far:

“Seek knowledge, even if it is in China.” (Hadith, although some scholars consider its chain weak, the meaning is widely accepted)

Knowledge is not limited to books. Sometimes it comes from observing how people live, work, and build their communities.

❤️ Building Empathy and Understanding

Travelling also humbles us. It makes us more empathetic. When we interact with people from different cultures, languages, and backgrounds, we realize that at the core, we are all human with hopes, dreams, and struggles.

The Qur’an beautifully explains the wisdom behind diversity:

“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.” (Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:13)

When we travel, we “know one another” in a deeper way. We appreciate differences while recognizing the universal values that unite us.

๐Ÿงญ Discovering Ourselves (and Each Other)

Every trip is also a journey inward. When you travel with family or friends, you discover more about them: their patience, resilience, sense of humor, and even their quirks. At the same time, you discover your own strengths and weaknesses.

I’ve learned that travelling teaches more than geography; it teaches character. A long walk on an unfamiliar road, a delayed flight, or getting lost in a new city can test patience, build problem-solving skills, and deepen bonds between companions.

The Prophet ๏ทบ once said:

“Travel with others, for indeed the lone traveler is a devil, two are two devils, but three are a company of riders.” (Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi)

Travelling together is not just safer, but also spiritually and emotionally enriching.

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ Coming Home with Gratitude

At the end of every journey, I always feel grateful to come home to Malaysia. Grateful for the safety, comfort, and opportunities we often take for granted. Travelling makes me proud to be Malaysian, a country blessed with peace, diversity, and beauty.

Sometimes, you need to step outside your home to truly appreciate it.

๐ŸŒŸ My Personal Hope

I hope to make travelling a yearly tradition to continue discovering new adventures, new cultures, and new lessons. More than that, I hope to carry back the wisdom, creativity, and gratitude that each trip gives me.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Final Reflection

Travelling is more than just leisure. It is ibadah (worship) if we approach it with the right intention. It is a chance to:

  • Witness the signs of Allah SWT.

  • Gain knowledge and wisdom.

  • Develop empathy and understanding.

  • Discover ourselves and our companions.

  • Return home with gratitude.

So, if you ever get the chance to travel, near or far, take it. Not just for the photos, but for the lessons. Let the world be your classroom, and let every journey bring you closer to Allah SWT.

๐Ÿ“ธ These are just some moments from my latest trip: the seaside at dawn, the mountains under the clouds, and the airport where countless journeys begin. Each picture is a reminder of the beauty, the adventure, and the gratitude that travelling brings.

๐Ÿ‘‰ What about you? Where would you like to travel next, and what do you hope to learn from it?

๐Ÿ—ฃ️ How to Speak Like a Top Performer: The Power of Words

๐Ÿ—ฃ️ How to Speak Like a Top Performer: The Power of Words

Have you ever noticed that in meetings, the person with the best ideas isn’t always the one who gets the most recognition? More often than not, it’s the person who communicates their ideas clearly, confidently, and persuasively.

This is the hidden truth of success at work: the difference between a top performer and everyone else is often communication.

John C. Maxwell once said, “Leadership is influence.” And influence, at its core, is nothing but effective communication. You may be brilliant, but if you cannot communicate your brilliance, someone with fewer ideas but better words will move ahead of you.

The Qur’an reminds us:

“And speak to people good [words].” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:83)

And the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said:

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.” (Hadith - Bukhari & Muslim)

Your words matter. They can build trust, inspire action, and open doors. Or they can create confusion, resistance, and even close opportunities.

๐Ÿ”‘ Why Words Matter: A Story from the Workplace

A few years ago, I witnessed two colleagues present the same solution to a problem. Let’s call them Ahmad and Sarah.

  • Ahmad began his presentation nervously: “This might sound silly, but I think maybe we should try this approach…”

  • Sarah, on the other hand, started with confidence: “Here’s an idea I believe will improve our results. Let’s consider this approach.”

Both had the same idea. Yet guess whose suggestion was taken seriously? Sarah’s.

It wasn’t because Ahmad’s idea was weak; it was because his words weakened it. Sarah framed the same thought with words that projected confidence, ownership, and belief.

This is what top performers do differently: they understand that every word is either building or breaking their credibility.

✅ Top Performer Phrases in Action

Here are some common scenarios and how top performers choose words that elevate their impact:

  1. When You Don’t Know Something

    • ❌ “I don’t know.”

    • ✅ “I’ll look into that and get back to you.”
๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: In a client meeting, admitting ignorance can lose trust. But promising to follow up shows accountability and professionalism.

  2. When You’re Busy

    • ❌ “I’m too busy.”

    • ✅ “I’ll be able to look into this on [date].”
๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: A manager once told me this phrase actually makes people respect your time instead of feeling brushed off.

  3. After a Mistake

    • ❌ “Sorry, I missed that.”

    • ✅ “Thank you for spotting that.”
๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: A colleague once reframed a mistake this way. Instead of looking incompetent, he looked collaborative and grateful, and the team trusted him more.

  4. When You Disagree

    • ❌ “You are wrong.”

    • ✅ “I have a different perspective.”
๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: In negotiations, this small shift avoids defensiveness. Instead of shutting doors, it keeps conversations open.

These examples (credit to Will McTighe for the infographic) show how a simple word swap can change how people perceive you.

๐ŸŒŸ Lessons from the Quran and Sunnah

Islam emphasizes that communication is not just a skill, it’s a form of character.

  • The Qur’an commands us to speak kindly, even in disagreement.

  • The Prophet ๏ทบ modeled this by using gentle words even with his harshest critics.

Imagine applying that wisdom at work: replacing harshness with perspective, excuses with accountability, and hesitation with clarity.

๐Ÿš€ Final Thoughts: Becoming a Top Performer

At the end of the day, the real edge of top performers isn’t just in their skills. It’s in how they communicate those skills with confidence and respect.

Words shape perception. Perception builds influence. And influence creates opportunities.

So, the next time you want to say “I’ll try,” replace it with “I’ll handle this.”
Instead of “Sorry to bother you,” say “Can we have a quick chat?”

These small changes will make a big difference in how others see you, and in how you see yourself.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Now it’s your turn: Which phrase will you start using today to sound more like a top performer? Share in the comments: let’s inspire each other to raise the standard of workplace communication!

๐Ÿš€ 9 Human Skills That AI Can’t Replace: The Real ROI in the Age of Technology

๐Ÿš€ 9 Human Skills That AI Can’t Replace: The Real ROI in the Age of Technology

In today’s fast-paced, AI-powered world, we are surrounded by tools that can draft emails, analyze data, and even design presentations in seconds. Technology has leveled the playing field. Almost everyone can now be more productive with a single click.

But here’s the truth: AI can enhance your abilities, but it cannot replace your humanity.

So how do you stand out in a world where AI makes everyone faster and smarter?
The answer lies in your soft skills and leadership skills: the very things that separate innovators from imitators, creators from mere users.

Below are 9 high-ROI skills that will pay you back for a lifetime, not just in your career but in your personal growth. Let’s explore each one with stories and lessons.

1. Keeping Your Word ๐Ÿค

When you say you’ll do something, actually do it. Trust is currency.
Imagine working with two colleagues: one always delivers on time, another always delays. Who would you recommend for a leadership role?

My late grandfather once told us, “If you want people to believe in you, start by keeping your promises, even the small ones.” That advice echoes the hadith of Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ:

“The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is trusted, he betrays the trust.” (Sahih Bukhari & Muslim)

2. Taking Ownership ๐Ÿ› ️

Don’t wait to be told. See a problem, step in, and solve it.
For example, if your team is stuck because no one has booked the meeting room, step up and handle it. Small acts of ownership make you indispensable.

Think of Sayyidina Abu Bakr As-Siddiq RA. After the Prophet ๏ทบ passed away, people hesitated about how to move forward. Abu Bakr stepped up with clarity and ownership, guiding the Ummah through one of its most difficult moments.

3. Getting Things Done ⚡

Overthinking is the enemy of execution. Successful people move fast, adapt, and fix problems as they go.

Remember Thomas Edison? He failed thousands of times before inventing the light bulb. His lesson: progress beats perfection. In our workplaces too, it’s not about who talks the most, but who delivers results.

The Qur’an reminds us:

“So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship].” (Surah Ash-Sharh, 94:7)
— a reminder that once one task is complete, move on to the next. Keep going.

4. Staying Calm Under Pressure ๐ŸŒŠ

Chaos and uncertainty test true character. Leaders who remain calm inspire confidence.

Picture a captain navigating a storm. If the captain panics, the crew will too. But a calm leader gives hope even when the waves are high.

The Prophet ๏ทบ remained composed even in the heat of battle, teaching his companions courage. Calmness is not weakness; it’s strength under control.

5. Making People Feel Important ๐ŸŒŸ

People may forget what you said, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.

Call a colleague by their name. Celebrate small wins. Acknowledge someone’s contribution in a meeting. These small actions create loyalty and trust.

The Prophet ๏ทบ was known for remembering names and giving attention to everyone, young and old. His companions felt valued, even in a crowd of thousands.

6. Asking Great Questions ❓

Curiosity is a superpower. Great questions unlock ideas and deeper conversations.

Instead of asking, “Did you finish the task?” try, “What challenges are you facing, and how can I help?” That one question can transform a relationship.

The Qur’an itself encourages questioning as a path to understanding:

“So ask the people of knowledge if you do not know.” (Surah An-Nahl, 16:43)

7. Having Emotional Intelligence ๐Ÿ’ก

Reading the room, sensing unspoken cues, and showing empathy are skills machines can’t replicate.

Think about a manager who notices you’re overwhelmed and offers support — versus one who piles on more work. Who earns your respect?

The Prophet ๏ทบ embodied emotional intelligence. He listened deeply, empathized with the weak, and uplifted hearts. Leadership without empathy is dictatorship.

8. Managing Up ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Success isn’t just about leading teams; it’s also about making your boss’s life easier. Anticipate needs, solve problems, and take initiative.

I once worked with a colleague who always had solutions ready before our manager even asked. Naturally, they became the go-to person for bigger projects. That’s how careers skyrocket.

9. Having Tough Conversations (with Compassion) ❤️

The hardest conversations are often the most important. Whether it’s giving feedback, addressing conflict, or admitting mistakes, honesty with compassion builds trust.

The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

“Religion is sincere advice.” (Sahih Muslim)

But notice how he gave advice: with wisdom, gentleness, and care, never to shame but to uplift.

The Bottom Line ๐ŸŒ

Technology will keep advancing. AI will write better reports, analyze deeper data, and automate more tasks. But it will never replace integrity, empathy, courage, and leadership.

These 9 skills are timeless. They’re not just “career hacks”; they’re life skills that create impact, legacy, and trust.

So ask yourself:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Which of these skills are you already practicing?
๐Ÿ‘‰ Which one do you need to develop next?

The return on investing in these skills is infinite. Start today.

Mengenang Tok: Pejuang Kemerdekaan & Pendidik Kehidupan

Mengenang Tok: Pejuang Kemerdekaan & Pendidik Kehidupan

Dua Pesanan Abadi Tok Kepada Kami

(Surah An-Najm, 53:39)

  1. Bantu Orang & Bersedekah Walau Sedikit
Tok mencontohkan sifat dermawan.

(HR. Muslim)

Rindu Yang Tidak Pernah Padam

Tok bukan sekadar pejuang politik, tetapi guru kehidupan.

Seruan Hari Merdeka

Merdeka bukan sekadar perayaan.

Walk Away From Negativity: Protect Your Peace, Self-Worth & Values

Walk Away From Negativity: Protect Your Peace, Self-Worth & Values

In life, not everything deserves a place in our hearts and minds. Nothing stays rent-free: every thought, every interaction, and every relationship has a price and an effect. That’s why it is so important to be intentional with the people we allow into our lives.

If there’s one principle I live by, it’s this: avoid negative people at all times.

Because the truth is simple: who we are is shaped by the six people we connect with the most. Their energy becomes our energy. Their mindset shapes our thinking. Their habits influence our own.

A Story of Two Circles

I once knew two friends who were almost like brothers. Let’s call them Ali and Ahmad.

Ali surrounded himself with people who loved knowledge, growth, and good company. His circle often met to read the Qur’an together, share ideas about business, and discuss how to improve their families. Even on days when Ali felt tired, his friends encouraged him, lifted his spirit, and reminded him of his goals.

Ahmad, on the other hand, spent his time with people who loved gossip, negativity, and endless complaints. Most of their evenings were filled with backbiting about others or pointing out what was wrong with the world, but never doing anything to fix it. Slowly, Ahmad became bitter, cynical, and discouraged. His prayers became lazy, his goals unclear, and his peace of mind completely shattered.

Two friends. Two different circles. Two very different lives.

The Prophet ๏ทบ already warned us about this reality:

“The example of a good companion and a bad one is that of a seller of musk and a blacksmith’s bellows. From the first, you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell, while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad smell.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Who we choose as our circle will either perfume our life with goodness or choke it with smoke.

What We Must Walk Away From

The image above (credit to original creator) reminds us of five things worth walking away from:

  1. Conversations filled with hate, gossip & negativity
    – Gossip spreads poison. The Qur’an compares it to eating the flesh of your dead brother (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:12). Would you ever do that? Of course not.

  2. Arguments that lead nowhere & pointless drama
    – Not every battle is worth fighting. Winning an argument but losing your peace is never a victory. The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

“I guarantee a house in Paradise for one who gives up arguing, even if he is in the right.”
    (Sunan Abu Dawood, 4800)

  3. One-sided relationships or fake friends
    – If you are always giving but never receiving, always listening but never heard—then it’s not friendship, it’s exploitation.

  4. People who put you down or toxic relationships
    – Don’t confuse criticism with cruelty. Real friends correct you with love. Toxic people crush you with judgment.

  5. Anything or anyone that disturbs your peace, self-worth, or values
    – Peace of mind is priceless. Protect it as you would protect a treasure.

A Personal Reflection

I remember once being part of a group where negativity was the daily menu. Every meeting turned into complaints, every conversation into gossip, and every idea into “this will never work.” At first, I tried to inspire them with positivity, but over time, I realized: I was becoming like them.

The moment I walked away, my energy changed. I found new circles—people who believed in growth, who inspired me with action instead of complaints. My productivity improved, my mindset shifted, and my heart felt lighter.

It reminded me of the Qur’an’s timeless guidance:

“O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.”
(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:119)

Final Thoughts

We only have a limited amount of energy each day. Why waste it on negativity when it can be invested in love, growth, and meaningful work?

Jim Rohn once said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Islam told us this truth 1,400 years ago through the wisdom of the Qur’an and Hadith.

✨ So choose wisely. Surround yourself with the right people. Walk away from the wrong ones without guilt. Protect your peace, it’s part of protecting your faith.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Reflection Question:
Who are the six people influencing your life right now? Are they lifting you higher—or pulling you down?

๐Ÿ“ข Share this article with someone who needs this reminder today. Let’s build circles of positivity, faith, and growth together.
