Recently, we came across a funny video on YouTube. It was an old video
but it was hilarious. Even our kids had a good laugh. It was a joke about the
level of communication skills at the White House. The conversation was centred
on the NEW leader of China that we just appoint at that time, Hu Jintao. The
whole conversation began with the reporting of ‘Hu, is the new leader in China.’
The reply came back with, ‘Who is the new leader in China?’ The conversation

Anyways, what we want to highlight is that one of the most important
skills to develop is your communication skills. The ability to communicate
is not just limited to your speaking ability but also your ability
to write, listen and also your body language.
In order to be successful in life, one must be able to carry oneself
with confidence. You must have the ability to express yourself and have the
confidence to contribute and share your ideas. As we have always mentioned in
our training's and talks we never started out as public speakers in fact we
would be the last people our friends would expect to be speakers and trainers
and yet here we are.
The point that we want to make is that you can learn the skills. The
best way to learn communication skills is through practice. Meaning you need to
put yourself in a position whereby you will need to communicate with other
people. For example, if you have a fear of speaking in public start
participating. Put your hands up and just talk. The key to success in life is
to get out of your comfort zone. Your mind will want you to stay in your
comfort zone, hence you need to overcome that and believe in your ability.
One of the ways that we have developed our speaking skills is by
doing a lot of presentations. There is no other way to do it. You try to learn
from other people and you try to emulate great speakers than you find your
own style. The most important thing is to get you exposed and get the
opportunity to do it so that you can learn from your experience. Remember you
don't have to be great to start.
You must understand that in the real world, communication is everything.
One of the biggest challenges for today's generation is the lack of actual one
on one contact as almost everything is done on the digital platform whether
through the many social network applications or through mobile devices. In
short more and more people are deprived from actually communicating with
people. Heck, we even know of a family that has to call their children
through Facebook just to get them to come down for dinner!
You don't have to go far to see how people are treating people nowadays
especially those involved in customer service. Companies have to invest a lot
of money to develop their front liners as they need people who can communicate.
How many times have you felt frustrated or that you find the people to be rude and
not friendly. Most of the times these people don't realize what they are
doing but what they are doing could have a negative impact on their
customers and more importantly the organizations that they are representing.
You must realize the importance of developing your communication skills.
You need to start and if you need to log out and go out and meet people than do
it. Make a point to join clubs and societies even sports teams is a
great avenue to just socialize and develop your communication skills informally
at first. This is serious because we know that there are actually some people who
struggle to even talk to other people let alone in a working or business
environment.
